Welcome to the UMF Academy

UMF Academy

United Martial Arts Fitness, UMF Academy, was established in 2005 by Pablo Cardenas.  It has grown from its origins as the North Queensland Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy, with 30 students, to incorporate many highly recognised martial arts programs with over 160 students and its own dedicated training facility.

UMF Academy hosts martial arts and combat experts from across the globe, and regularly offers special events for students and the general community of Townsville.

For adults, the UMF Academy offers Wing Chun Kung Fu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Combatives, Muay Thai Kickboxing/Boxing, Street Edge Krav Maga, Thump Boxing and FREE Women’s Self-Defence classes.

For children, the UMF Academy offers Little Dragons (ages 4-7) and Young Warriors (ages 8-14) Wing Chun Kung Fu, Kickboxing/Boxing 4 Kids (ages 6-14) and Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Combatives (ages 6-14).

All children’s programs include Non Striking Solutions and Bully Buster SystemTM programs to teach children anti-bullying skills.  UMF Academy provides the industry’s #1 Character Development System, created by child development expert specifically for the martial arts, and licensed in Townsville exclusively to UMF Academy.  This will assist children to demonstrate the same skills with their teachers at school and with parents at home.  UMF’s Character Development System is implemented in ALL children’s programs.

UMF Academy students are made up of almost every type of person you can think of – tradies, soldiers, security officers, doctors, lawyers, students, law enforcement, teachers, nurses, business people, and more.  Every day our students walk into the academy for the same reasons: to be better, to improve their health and well-being, learning ability and stress levels.  Our students are taking the lessons learned on the mat and applying them to their everyday life and making their lives better.

As parents we want nothing more than for our children to do well in school. We want them to feel confident, happy, and to experience success. We want them to build positive friendships that support them to do their best and be their best. The last thing we want is for them to fall in with the “wrong crowd” at school or be involved with social missteps such as bullying.

Unsure whether to sign your child up for a sports team or a martial arts class? Not sure how to choose between the two?

Then you need to know the unique benefits offered by martial arts classes to help you make an informed decision. Martial arts involve working with a team of others and there is competition, personal growth and sportsmanship involved. When we look at soccer, football, tennis and other common school aged sports, this might make you think that martial arts will give your child exactly the same benefits

What you might not see are the fundamental differences between martial arts and other sports.

What is the Best Age for My Child to begin Martial Arts training?

By | August 15, 2016

What is the right age for my child to commence classes? This is a question we are asked so very often. The answer is that they should start when they’re ready and when they are interested and when the opportunity serendipitously presents itself.

You may have heard young children’s minds being compared to sponges that soak up their environment and learning with no filters, and no judgement.

How do I Choose the Best Martial Art for My Child to Start in?

By | August 14, 2016

When choosing a martial art for your child to start you can take into consideration their personality and what they are interested in and particularly if they have expressed interest in a particular martial art form.

And then as their parent you may like to consider that is not the Art, but the teacher that matters, at least for young children. Good teachers have the ability to connect with children.

By | August 12, 2016

When we read in the media about children doing martial arts training our accepted perception is that martial arts is great for our children to learn self-defence and improve their overall physical fitness.
